Bible Maturity - Bible Devotions Bible Maturity Bible Devotions Regular Bible devotionals to help your spiritual growth toward biblical maturity. These short Bible devotionals are designed to promote spiritual growth, faith in God, and revival. Each one includes a few inspirational Bible verses. The devotionals function as trumpets in the Bible did. The goal is spiritual revival of individuals and churches. In the Bible, trumpets served twelve purposes: 1. Lead people into God's presence to listen to His voice. 2. Usher people into true worship. 3. Announce good news. 4. Declare a new king and a new kingdom - the kingdom of God. 5. Rally the church to active faith. 6. Facilitate effective ministry through cooperation with God. 7. Appeal to God's promised favor and protection. 8. Sound a warning of spiritual danger. 9. Offer a chance to get right with God. 10. Invite people to recommit themselves. 11. Proclaim freedom from sin and a fresh start in life. 12. Urge people to be prepared for Jesus to return. There was always a morning tea break. Everyone headed down to the farmhouse and the farmer’s wife served tea . . . and, sometimes, amazing chocolate digestive biscuits! (You should try them.) Sometimes the farmer fell asleep for […] This entry was posted in Revival on March 13, 2017 by John Avery. Keys for Revival Luke chapter fifteen contains a set of three parables about rejoicing. The first two have three important elements: something lost, a loser, and a celebration when the loser finds the lost. Jesus asks the men and women listening to imagine that they have each lost a sheep or a coin. When they find it they […] This entry was posted in Articles, Revival on March 11, 2017 by John Avery. Blocked Goals How do you respond to setbacks or blocked goals? For me, it depends on the situation. But if my project meets resistance, or a successful ministry appears to be in decline, I start to hear a little voice. It nags me about personal inadequacy or failure. It makes me mad. I understand anger as a […] This entry was posted in Articles, Failures on January 29, 2017 by John Avery. Failures I wanted to call this piece, “The Failures of Jesus”, but you probably would not have read it. Jesus was not a failure. But when we consider some of the results of Jesus’ ministry encounters I think you will agree with me that they were not exactly successes. More important, if we put ourselves into […] This entry was posted in Failures on January 25, 2017 by John Avery. Anger and Violence What do you think? Are anger and violence expressions of power or of weakness? Moses explosive outburst against an Egyptian slave-driver was about as fruitful as an expensive firework. The loss of a taskmaster didn’t weaken pharaoh. The Hebrews sneered. Moses ran for his life. How counterproductive our self-efforts can be! Now it came about […] This entry was posted in Articles, The Believer's Identity, Discipleship on January 19, 2017 by John Avery. Clearing Cluttered Hearts Few of us have much understanding of farming conditions in Israel. In many countries, we see vast fields surrounded by tidy fences or hedges. Crops grow in an almost sterile environment with hardly a weed visible. Rarely does the plough encounter a stone larger than a potato. One summer I worked on a typical farm […] This entry was posted in The voice of God on January 15, 2017 by John Avery. Ears to Hear Whenever I go to a doctor I expect a diagnosis before any treatment. I dislike taking medicine just to alleviate symptoms. Treat the underlying condition and the symptoms will vanish. Similarly, it is important to understand the roots of spiritual deafness and blindness so that full health can be restored. One of the main reasons […] This entry was posted in The voice of God on January 11, 2017 by John Avery. The Parable of Parables Story time was over. The keel of the fishing boat ground into the gravel along the shore and the men stopped rowing. Jesus climbed over the side and paddled to the beach. As He and the disciples gathered their gear and prepared to go back to the house to rest, one of the disciples raised […] This entry was posted in Articles, The voice of God on January 8, 2017 by John Avery. Keys to Successful Ministry I find it sobering that one of the best biblical examples of successful ministry looks so different from my efforts. I’m probably not unusual in my preparation for speaking or leading a Bible study. Some messages take me several hours of Bible reading, research, and prayer before I am even ready to compile my rough […] This entry was posted in Articles, The voice of God, Dreams, Discipleship on January 5, 2017 by John Avery. Wild Butterflies I have often wondered why there is confusion in the Christian life between what God does for us and our own continuous struggle. Paul’s words to the Philippians capture the tension well: Work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to […] This entry was posted in Discipleship on December 29, 2016 by John Avery.
